Mabou School of Cape Breton Step Dance
Mabou, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
About the School:
This week of instruction in Cape Breton step dance will be led by Melody Cameron, a Mabou based fiddler and dancer with over 40 years of experience. It will also feature some of the island's finest dancers as guest instructors. In addition, there will be a series of afternoon presentations with guest speakers covering dance form and technique, connections between Gaelic language, music and dance and historical links to Scotland.
Participants will be divided into two groups with dance classes running simultaneously at two locations, the St. Mary's Parish Hall on Highway 19 in Mabou and the Beinn Mhàbu campus located at 32 MacDonald Road, just past Mabou's St. Mary's Parish Church. Melody Cameron will be on hand to offer dance instruction every day but participants will also be treated to a different guest step dance instructor each day. Each afternoon, there will be a 20 - 30 minute cultural presentation followed by instruction in Cape Breton square sets and Scotch Four dances.
The goals for the school are not only to offer high quality dance instruction, but also to give participants a well rounded Mabou, Cape Breton experience. We want to promote our area's dances, ceilidhs, artisans, dining establishments, beaches and nature walks. Our days are starting at 9:30 am to accommodate people that might have been up late at a community dance the night before. There will be a two hour lunch break each day so that participants might enjoy their noon time dining and not feel rushed. We end each day at 3:30 pm to leave lots of time for the beach, a walk, a boat tour or just to relax.
Please note - Mabou School of Cape Breton Step Dance does not book accommodations for its' participates, but we will email you a list of places to stay in Mabou and surrounding area once you have registered through this site. We encourage all our students to book accommodations early.
